How VisNote geo-tags your captures — VisNote

A short tour of what happens when you tap the capture button — and what stays on your device.

Most apps that geo-tag do it by phoning home. VisNote does it on your device.

What gets captured

When you tap capture, VisNote reads:

  • The timestamp from your phone’s clock.
  • The GPS coordinates from your phone’s location service (if you’ve granted permission).
  • The name of the place from a local reverse-geocoder — no network request.
  • Whatever photo, audio, or note you chose to attach.

Where it lives

All of this goes into an encrypted SQLite database on your device. If you’ve enabled sync, an end-to-end encrypted copy is pushed to your account. We, the VisNote team, cannot read it.

What you can turn off

  • Location entirely (settings → capture → location off).
  • Reverse-geocoding (captures keep coordinates but no place name).
  • Sync (captures stay on the device they were taken on).

The defaults are on because location is usually the thing that makes a capture findable later. But the controls are one tap away.
